Basically, in the song editor, press draw to create a part (whatever number of measures) then double press that part and press draw again and start placing notes on the part editor grid. Use the drag handles to move the notes around or adjust their lengths. Unselect Draw will make it easier to move notes, and you can also use copy/paste to place a bunch of notes. Pretty easy and intuitive once you get into it.
